Ph.D. Candidate | Dalhousie University
Supervisor: Dr. Kyle Tousignant, Ph.D., P.Eng

Brendan Richards started the Master of Applied Science (MASc) program at Dalhousie University in January of 2022 and, after making exceptional progress in his first year of study, fast-tracked into the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program in September 2023. Under the supervision of Dr. Kyle Tousignant, Brendan is conducting research on the complex behaviours of rectangular hollow section (RHS) members in gravity and moments resisting frames.

The goal of Brendan’s research is to facilitate the efficient use of RHS beams and beam-columns through experimental testing and numerical analysis, with focuses on the ultimate capacity of f ield-bolted RHS-to-RHS column splices, design procedures for Class 4 (or slender) RHS flexural members, and the applicability of current limiting depth-to-thickness ratios for the classification of RHS webs in flexure and combined loading. Brendan’s research is expected to provide improved design guidance for Canadian steel design standards, further promote the use of steel RHS in a range of new applications and further foster innovation and development within the industry.
