The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is listening to businesses and helping to improve the predictability of the Scientific Research and Experimental Development (SR&ED) Program by offering new services and tools for businesses and/or authorized representatives.

In addition to the recent launch of the Pre-Claim Consultation the CRA is now introducing the Pre-Claim Review.

The Pre-Claim Review is a free, on-demand review that will give claimants a determination on how much of their R&D work is eligible and what expenditures qualify for the SR&ED tax incentives, before they file their SR&ED claim. This provides claimants assurance that the CRA will accept their entire claim when it is filed.

The Pre-Claim Review will be implemented gradually across Canada, as a pilot, so that the CRA can assess if it meets claimant’s expectations for increased predictability.

The Pre-Claim Review will be offered in the western provinces, the Yukon and the Northwest Territories beginning in August 2016, in Ontario and Nunavut in October 2016, and in Quebec and eastern provinces in November 2016.

Businesses that wish to take advantage of the Pre-Claim Review must meet specific criteria, and complete the online Request for a Pre-Claim Review.
