This presentation will cover how some Provinces and other owners are adapting to climate change and extreme weather events by utilising the versatility of pre-engineered modular bridges and accelerated bridge construction. It will dive into questions such as: What makes a modular bridge a sustainable option? What are the first steps to specifying a modular bridge? This presentation will also provide an outlook on sustainable and resilient abutment solutions that can be paired with modular bridges.

Renzo Piano’s New Genoa San Giorgio Bridge – Setting New Standards in the Aftermath of Tragedy

Hellen Christodoulou

Director, Steel Market and Industry Development
Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC-ICCA)

On August 14, 2018, we all witnessed the tragic collapse of the Morandi Bridge in Italy, one of the longest concrete bridges in the world when it opened in September 1967; it spanned 1,102 metres and was both a significant and
integral part of Genoa’s infrastructure. A few months later, on December 19, 2018, the announcement
was made that a new bridge was to be immediately constructed as a replacement and the new bridge was to be christened the “Genoa-Saint George Bridge,” and the vision for the construction of a new steel bridge, that would set new standards in efficiency for a project of its size and complexity. This session will give an overview of this project.

12:00 PM

Elevating Steel at Calgary’s Westbrook Pedestrian Bridge
A Hybrid Project Gone Right!

Hellen Christodoulou
PH.D. Ing., B.C.L., LL.B, M.B.A.
Director, Steel Market and Industry Development
Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC-ICCA)

It’s an innovative blend of steel and concrete that gives Calgary’s Westbrook Pedestrian Bridge its lift. Spanning the city’s Bow Trail expressway, the 32-metre structure serves as a stylish connecting point between the Spruce Cliff community and Westbrook Mall, and is a visible example of hybrid projects done right. This project highlights the advantages of using steel, steel’s strength was also a factor in the design’s success, also allowing very streamlined connections between the two materials. This session will cover some of the highlights of this project.

12:30 PM

Throwing the Calgary Ring Road for a Curve!
Steel Helps Bridge 36A Take Shape

Hellen Christodoulou
PH.D. Ing., B.C.L., LL.B, M.B.A.
Director, Steel Market and Industry Development
Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC-ICCA)

The Calgary Ring Road infrastructure project, came into full circle thanks to Supreme Steel and KGL Constructors. In 2020, crews completed the southwest portion of the east-west trade corridor, helping to both connect Alberta’s economy and showcase the versatility of steel. This bridge was one of the most challenging ones because of its curved geometry. This session will cover the key aspects of this project.
