Central Valley Greenway Bridge

Project Description

The Winston Street and Sperling Avenue Central Valley Greenway Bridge provides safe passage over Winston Street and the adjacent Burlington and Northern Sante Fe Railway. The bridge is a key part of the Central Valley Greenway, a 24 kilometer route for cycling, jogging, walking, wheelchairs, skateboarding and blading that links multiple destinations, communities, and workplaces in the Lower Mainland.

The height of the bridge is governed by clearance requirements for the railway. Attaining this height, with a gradient suitable for wheel-chairs and other wheeled vehicles, required a long, gently sloped approach to the main span. The approach is precast concrete, structured out of a series of two identical shapes, one curved and one straight. The 66m main span is a structural steel truss. Illumination is provided by fluorescent lamps housed within custom perforated aluminum curbs. The colours of the bridge reinforce its construction in a lively way.
