This project addressed a unique structural challenge that is experienced in Canada’s extreme climatic conditions. The idea of suspension is employed to allow the three floor structure to be erected in areas where traditional foundations are not possible or prohibitively expensive – permafrost, water, ice, rock outcroppings, etc. – allowing an economic and easily erected structure in hostile environments previously avoided. The circular form of the structure is a rational extension of the idea of suspension and will respond well to directional storms, reducing the area of contact and allowing an equal distribution of the cable system.
