The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) represents steel producers, processors, and suppliers from coast to coast. Here in Quebec, our members play key roles in the construction of roads, bridges, and buildings.
Every time we choose domestic steel, we support not only thousands of workers but also expertise that is a source of local pride.

Buy Local

In these times when American tariffs weigh heavily on our industry, the Quebec government has expressed its intention to prioritize local purchasing. This is excellent news: when we rely on local resources, the impact is felt throughout every region.

Certainly, some projects require elements that may not be locally available, but it remains essential to prioritize our suppliers and workforce whenever possible, especially now when every job counts.

The Île d’Orléans bridge project clearly illustrates this challenge. Our understanding is that, unfortunately, a foreign consortium—in this case, Spanish—has received the lion’s share of this significant contract.

It doesn’t make sense for Quebec that most of the added value, whether it’s steel, technical components, or even engineering work, goes elsewhere. In the current context, failing to utilize our local industry contradicts the collective desire to promote domestic purchasing and support our economy.

No Response

On March 31, we sent a letter to the Québec Minister of Transportation to emphasize the importance of involving Quebec stakeholders in this project. Unfortunately, we have yet to receive a response. We believe it is urgent to highlight that constructing major infrastructure like this bridge, along with other upcoming projects, represents significant economic leverage.

Investing in local steel and expertise means investing in wealth creation here at home and sustaining thousands of jobs eager to participate in major projects.

For the benefit of our workers, our businesses, and ultimately our entire economy, it is time for the government to ensure our local industry can contribute to large-scale projects. Domestic steel, renowned for its expertise and quality, is ready for the challenge. We therefore call on decision-makers to act so that these major projects primarily benefit those who build them: our own people.
