Module 6

Design Module 6, Industrial Steel Structures, illustrates the design of a typical mill building carrying two 40-tonne cranes. The example frame, featured in the CISC course on Industrial Building Design, consists of diagonally laced stepped columns with a 25 m-span Pratt truss supporting the roof and lateral loads. Among the structural aspects covered in this module are: design standards, toughness and temperature, coatings, standing-seam roofs, rehabilitation and boiler support structures.

DM6 is based mainly on the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC 2010) and CSA Standard S16-09 (Design of Steel Structures). An overview of CSA S16-14 and a discussion of the changes impacting industrial structures are also included.
