SME Apprenticeship Assistance Program
The Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) has been approved as an intermediary of the federal government, providing financial assistance to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) when hiring new, first-year Red Seal qualifying apprentices in the Construction and Manufacturing sectors. This project will be delivered across Canada in all provinces and runs until March 31, 2024.
The project’s specific objectives are to:
- Create awareness across the country about the financial incentive provided to SMEs to hire new, first-year, apprenticeship in the 39 Red Seal trades;
- Support SMEs in training a new generation of apprentices on-the-job and in becoming
facilitators for candidates to obtain licences, accreditation, and certification in trades such as: Sheet Metal Worker, Welder, Mobile Crane Operator, Tower Crane Operator, Construction Craft Worker, Ironworker Generalist, Ironworker (Reinforcing), Ironworker (Structural and Ornamental), Metal Fabricator (Fitter), Roofer, Steamfitter and Pipefitter; - Support SMEs in training a new generation of non-steel related trades used in the steel industry such as: Boilermaker, Instrumentation and Control Technician, Machinist, Tool and Die Maker, Industrial Electrician, and Industrial Mechanic (Millwright); and
- Improve the participation and success of equity-deserving groups including women, Indigenous people, newcomers, persons with disabilities, visible minorities, and LGBTQ2+ in skilled trades training and careers through mentorship, Essential Skills Training, Respectful and Inclusive Workplaces Online Training and additional wrap around supports.
This position is a contract term position under the provisions of the agreement with the Federal Government of Canada and ends on March 31, 2024. The individual will ensure that the program is well promoted across Canada and within budget and targets met. This position reports directly to the Program Promotion Manager.
Responsibilities & Duties:
- Provide promotion and information the program concentrating on SMEs within the steel industry
- Contact SMEs within the steel manufacturing and construction sector promoting the program
- Attend, set up and participate in trade shows (booth)
- Provide presentations and speeches
- Meetings with SMEs
- Develop sector contact lists
- Contact colleges, unions and trade training institutions
- Assist in mailout development and campaigns
- Telephone and email promotion
- Manage resources to maintain budget and volume targets
- Ensure SMEs are aware and educated on the program
- Be an expert on apprenticeship, routes and opportunities for SMEs
- User support
- SME and apprenticeship enquiries
- SME onboarding assistance
- SME agreement assistance
- SME training assistance
- Support to Registrar where required
- Statistics and data tracking and collection
- Coordinate translation of materials
- Social media and marketing support
- Preparation of reports
- Provide meeting, presentation, and trade show planning support
- Other duties as required
- Submit and update status reports to your supervisor (frequency to be agreed upon).
- Update and maintain information & records accurately and as per any CISC policies.
- Provides services to other departments as directed by your supervisor.
- Abide by the CISC Employee Handbook, CISC Policies and Procedures and other directives (as applicable)
- Travel in Canada to perform duties is required.
Education:
A university or college degree is an asset.
Experience:
Two to three years of promotional related work experience and working within budgets. Experience dealing courteously and effectively with the public within a service-oriented environment.
Skills:
- Demonstrated advanced writing and verbal communication skills in English (French a strong asset).
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, among others) plus advanced email and internet skills.
- Self motivated and organized
- Knowledge and proficiency in all social media platforms.
- Excellent organizational and project management skills, including the ability to work independently, meet deadlines, coordinate a number of projects simultaneous in response to changing or conflicting priorities.
- Attending accurately to details and working effectively under pressure of high volume under competing time demands because of multiple, overlapping projects.
- Working effectively in a team environment while also being highly self-directed.
- Demonstrating a willingness to learn new technology and engage in continuous learning of current and emerging technology.
- Exercising high levels of tact and diplomacy, as well as the ability to deal courteously and effectively with clients and colleagues, often in pressure-oriented and difficult situations, to obtain information and provide communications services.
- Demonstrating excellent attendance and punctuality required.
