The fourth and fifth modules in CISC’s Design Modules lineup have been published and are now available.

Design Module 4, “Straight Steel Girder Bridges”, illustrates the design of composite, continuous multi-span steel bridges following a straight roadway alignment. This module includes detailed calculations of a 3-span plate girder bridge (see Figure 1) and a 2-span box girder bridge (Figure 2). Structural design aspects covered in the examples include section properties, slab reinforcement, slab casting sequence, moment resistance before and after composite action, shear resistance, cross-frame forces, control of cracking, camber, superstructure vibrations, fatigue, wind and seismic loads, and field splice design.

Design Module 5, “Curved Steel Girder Bridges”, illustrates the design of horizontally curved, continuous multi-span steel bridges. The module includes detailed calculations of a 3-span plate girder bridge (see Figure 3) and a 2-span box girder bridge (Figure 4). Structural design aspects include composite section properties, torsional stresses, erection procedure, slab casting sequence, moment resistance before and after composite action, shear resistance, cross-frame forces, centrifugal forces, superstructure vibrations and fatigue.

Based on CSA Standard S6-14, Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code, the bridge design examples in DM4 and DM5 are featured in the CISC course on Steel Bridges – Design, Fabrication, Construction. Structural steel plates conform to CSA G40.21 grades 350A and 350AT.

The live load analysis for the straight girder bridges in DM4 is based on the “Simplified Method of Analysis” in CSA S6, while the curved bridges in DM5 have been analyzed using finite element analysis.
