TORONTO, ON (NOVEMBER 5, 2025) – The past year has been one of the most difficult in recent memory for Canada’s steel industry, as ongoing trade challenges continue to create instability and threaten the sector’s competitiveness. Support from the federal government is critical to ensuring the long-term strength and competitiveness of Canada’s steel construction industry.

“The measures in Budget 2025, including billions in public infrastructure investment and funding for the Buy Canadian procurement policy, will help sustain the steel construction sector and keep Canadians working during this critical time. The CISC looks forward to the tabling and full implementation of a Buy Canadian policy, which includes fabricated steel, ensuring taxpayer dollars deliver maximum benefit to Canada’s economy, workforce, and industrial base,” said Keanin Loomis, President and CEO of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction.

The Federal Budget, Canada Strong, provides important measures to support the steel fabrication sector, including:

  • $115 billion in infrastructure investments over five years and $25 billion over five years for housing;
  • Support for a Buy Canadian procurement policy, including $98.2 million to support the implementation of the new Buy Canadian Policy and $79.9 million for the new Small and Medium Business Procurement Program;
  • $5 billion to create the Trade Diversification Corridors Fund, which aims to spur the development of infrastructure to move our products to global markets to strengthen supply chains, and unlock new export opportunities; and
  • Funding to strengthen border and import security, including additional funding for the RCMP and for CBSA.

“We recognize the difficult fiscal and policy environment the federal government has navigated over recent months and appreciate its continued engagement with industry stakeholders. We continue to urge the government to bring a definitive resolution to the ongoing tariff uncertainty, to protect Canada’s steel sector’s sustainability and growth.”
