Canadian Government Proposes Plan to Make the National Building Code Free for All Canadians

The Government of Canada has proposed $67.5 million of funding over the course of five years to the National Research Council of Canada in order to provide free access to the National Building Codes. In addition to the ongoing $13.5 million, this funding will also provide sufficient resources for the federal government to address provincial, territorial, and other stakeholder code development priorities in a more timely way.

The federal government aims to give small businesses across Canada, which is made up of approximately 99% of Canada’s construction industry, access to the building construction codes needed to execute building products, design and construction. This will ensure that all municipalities can readily access and use the latest codes as they become available to provide safe and accessible buildings for every individual in Canadian communities.
