Steel-Framed Office Building Design Notes 2004

(2004)

These notes illustrate the limit states design of a three-storey office building. They refer extensively to the National Building Code of Canada 1995 (NBC 1995) and to CAN/CSA-S16- 01 “Limit States Design of Steel Structures”. In addition, there are many references to the CISC Handbook of Steel Construction, 8th Edition, 2004. This publication supersedes an earlier “Steel- Framed Low-Rise Office Building Design Aid” based on CAN/CSA-S16.1-94.

The example building comprises common structural steel components used in floor and roof framing, such as composite girders and open-web steel joists. Designed to resist wind and earthquake loads in accordance with NBC 1995 and S16-01, the building serves to illustrate the design of lateral-load-resisting systems for various representative locations. Steel braced frame and moment-resisting frame solutions commonly used for various seismic zones are illustrated.
