Commercial Station is part of the new Vancouver Millennium Line, extension to the above grade transit system for the Greater Vancouver Area. The stations were part of a high design initiative by the Rapid Transit Authority.

The Commercial Station forms a transfer point between the Expo and Millennium Lines. Its situation in the Grandview Cut presented large site issues during the construction phases. Before construction of the station proper could begin, the walls of the deep ravine had to be reinforced and held away from the new on grade tracks. Whereas most of the Skytrain track is elevated, this station, being the crossover point between the Expo and Millennium Lines, had to run beneath the existing line.

More information on the design and construction of the Millennium Line stations is available through the Steel Structures Education Foundation CD-ROM, Volume Two. See www.ssef-ffca.ca for more details.
