This addition was designed by renowned East Coast Architect, Brian MacKay-Lyons, who also teaches at the School of Architecture at Dalhousie.
According to MacKay-Lyons, the project was informed by studies of the built fabric of the city and the aspiration to provide a new room in the University which could be used by students, faculty and the community. Located on Spring Garden Road at the southern edge of the original colonial town grid, this new room is aligned with the Town Clock and is connected to George Street, which links the Citadel, City Hall and St. Paul's Church in the historic core of Halifax. The project is a metal box inserted into the courtyard of the existing U-shaped school building and constructed over an existing auditorium. The addition completes the plan of the existing building. Glazed 'reveals' help to distinguish between the old and the new.
The exposed steel structure that forms the architectural expression of the interior of the studio and multi height exhibition spaces, creates a wonderful toolkit of steel connections for students to learn about the material, its connection types and potential for expression. |
