This two-storey, 55,000 square foot, $13M Learning Centre is a unique building of world class caliber. The University of Alberta and its' strategic partner TELUS joined forces to develop a professional development centre situated at the U of A campus. Multi-use learning areas focusing on the best technology and flexible program delivery were created, in a unique cluster format, encouraging multiple levels of breakaway space. Along with the learning areas, including a 300-seat lecture theatre, a video-conferencing room, various flexible learning centers/classrooms and program production areas, the building houses a three-storey canoe shaped atrium, business centre, dining and lounge spaces. The centre is also set up to house a future Cyber Cafe'.
The U of A's control centre will be located at TELUS Centre, supporting much of the technology for classrooms throughout the campus. The design of the building in its intent, is highly innovative with its' dramatic sweeping form and unique shape. The shape and interior encourages a complete integration of the specialized exterior landscape within each area of the facility. Kasian was responsible for the architecture and interior design of this project. A number of key design objectives were identified including flexibility to address future program opportunities; acknowledging the evolutionary nature of learning, technology and the marketplace; in an environment that is comfortable, professional and 'upbeat'.
The atrium space uses Architecturally Exposed Structural Steel to create dynamic character. The exposed steel system gives support to the tall glazed walls that form either end of the diamond shaped plan. The steel shapes used reflect their tension and compression roles - many slender members being used to give both strength and form to the innovative roof truss.
The 2006 meeting of the Steel Structures Education Foundation was held in this facility. |
