Graduate Scholarship ($7500) for Steel Structures Studies

I. Name

The award will be known as the Atlantic University Scholarship for Steel Structures Studies. The fund from which scholarships are awarded is The CISC Atlantic Regional Scholarship Fund administered by the CISC Atlantic Regional Committee.

II. Purpose

The Atlantic Regional Committee of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction (CISC) has established this graduate scholarship program to support an engineer who is pursuing a post graduate degree in Civil Engineering with emphasis on research on structural steel structures or a related steel topic. The applicant can be a recent engineering graduate or an engineer that is working in industry, government or the academic field. The goal is to provide monetary support to the person doing research to advance the knowledge in structural steel and to encourage that person to continue their career in the structural steel industry.

III. Eligibility

To be eligible for this scholarship the applicant must:

  1. Have already graduated or have just graduated with a degree in Engineering.
  2. Be prepared to do a post graduate degree with their research being involved with structural steel structures or a related topic.
  3. Attend one of the four Atlantic Engineering Universities (University of New Brunswick, University of Moncton, Dalhousie University or Memorial University).
  4. Submit a completed application with any required attachments before the application due date.

IV. Administration

The Scholarship is intended to be awarded in February 2010 to a person who has already graduated or a student in their final term of undergraduate studies in Civil Engineering. The Scholarship is awarded for one year.

The completed applications must be submitted to the Atlantic Regional Committee of the Canadian Institute of Steel Construction not later than January 29th, 2010.

Applications will be reviewed by the Atlantic Region Marketing Director, Atlantic Region Committee Chairman, and two other Atlantic Region CISC qualified persons. This committee will make the final decision as to the recipient of the scholarship.

A payment of $4000.00 will be made to the successful student when they have registered in the post graduate program and their steel research topic has been approved by the university and their academic advisor/supervisor or employer. The remaining $3500.00 will be made once their academic advisor/supervisor or employer has advised that six months of the program has been completed.

V. Application

No application form is provided. Each applicant must submit a written application in English, which at a minimum will include the following information:

  1. A statement explaining their graduate research project and their rationale for the selection of this particular project.
  2. A statement illustrating their intention in maintaining involvement with the steel industry (i.e. working with a steel fabricator or a structural consultant, or in pursuing an academic position within an educational institution). An outline of their intended career objectives would also be of interest.
  3. An official transcript of the applicant’s past academic record.
  4. A statement of recommendation from the student’s academic supervisor or employer.
